How to Use/ Work with keyboard as a Mouse

The keyboard is also used to access features in window in place of the mouse. Pressing keys to navigate windows is not as elegant as clicking the mouse, but you can access every windows feature from the keyboard. In fact using keyboard is faster than grabbing and moving the mouse. The mouse might also be disfunctioning or have wrong settings.

Here are the basic keyboard techniques for accessing the windows interface. Try out them out and see if you can prefer them over using mouse.

1. press ALT-TAB or ALT-Esc to jump between windows.

2. press the arrow keys to move among objects in a window or on the desktop.

3. Press ENTER to open a window or start a program.

4. press TAB to move between fields in open windows or dialog boxes.

5. Use appropriate arrow keys to go through from one character to another back and forth or up and down the lines and pages.

6. If a window is open, press ALT-SPACEBAR to open its control menu. The control menu has options for manually moving, sizing, minimizing, maximizing and closing a window. Just type the underlined letter of the option you want to choose. If you choose Move(M), a four-headed arrow appears in the window’s title bar. Press an appropriate arrow key to move the window in the direction you want, then press ENTER. Resizing window using the control menu size option is a two step process. You first choose size on the menu, then you press an arrow key to indicate which window border you want to move. Finally, you press the appropriate arrow key to move the border you selected. Press ENTER when you’ve resized the window.

7. Press ALT-F4 to close the window.
