Computer Hardware Inventory List

Computer Hardware Inventory List : When you're troubleshooting hardware problems, you need to know the make and model of the equipment you're dealing with. But if you've never worked on the PC before, that can be a challenge. This update of our hardware inventory list will make it easy to record the necessary details for quick reference.

I've always believed that the first step to troubleshooting a PC, or any machine for that matter, is to know the equipment you're dealing with. While this sounds like a simple concept, I can't tell you how many times I've been confronted with a video adapter, sound card, motherboard, or other peripheral device that had no markings to identify the manufacturer or model. Such confusion can add minutes, if not hours, to the time it takes to resolve a problem—especially if you're downloading new drivers. To help you avoid issues like these, I've developed a computer hardware inventory list, which you can download here.

To use the drop-down menus, you will need to protect the document first. To do this, click Tools | Protect Document, select Forms from the Protect Document pop-up window, and click OK.

The list includes fields for the following computer components:

* CPU
* Motherboard
* RAM
* Hard drive
* Power supply
* Hard drive 2
* Sound card
* Video card
* CD-R/RW
* DVD
* Modem
* NIC
* Other cards

Computer Hardware Troubleshooting

Computer Hardware Troubleshooting : There could be many reasons why you'd want to troubleshoot your computer, well, one actually and that's because something is not working right. The process of troubleshooting is something you learn after working for a long time with computers.

There are several websites that offer tips on how to repair computer. Unknown to some computer users, most of the computer problems you encounter is caused by software-related matters. In order to avoid software-related computer problems, it is highly recommended that you update your applications, drivers and operating systems by having their most recent versions.

Generally there are only so many steps you can take before you solve the problem and everything is back in order. Make sure that before you start testing and swapping out parts that the problem wasn't caused by you changing a software setting in Windows or some ambiguous option in the motherboard's BIOS that causes your problem.

6 Tips For Computer Problem Troubleshooting :
1. Reboot (turn the machine off and then on again)
2. Run a Virus check, but first run a virus update.
3. Try to decide on the area of the problem.
4. If your computer doesn't start up, then you should look behind it and make sure that all the cables are plugged firmly into the computer.
5. Check to see if you get any lights on the computer.
6. If your computer freezes in the operating system.

Simply put, hardware is the tangible parts of your computer, parts you can touch, feel and so on. In general, best practice is to back up the files at least monthly and more frequently if users access the files regularly.

In case you are not able to start the system, you should first look at the power supply of the compute. There may be various reasons behind this, mostly contributed to software issues.Often a device that will not power-up could have unintentionally come to be unplugged or in theory a wire may have become loose.

Motherboard Gigabyte EP45-DQ6

The DQ6 class of motherboards have a way of creating their own headlines as each revision comes into existence and GA-EP45-DQ6 has several landmark features to make the DQ6 family proud of this newcomer. On board, you'll find four PCIe based Realtek 8111C Gigabit LAN controllers and this is readily seen by the rear-I/O panel's impressive quad Gigabit LAN ports. Before your jaw drops to the floor, we'll jog your memory that this isn't the world's first consumer board with quad LAN ports - that honor while still belonging to Gigabyte, was first introduced in their nForce 680i implementation in the GA-N680SLI-DQ6 motherboard . So that makes the GA-EP45-DQ6 the second board in history to feature four Gigabit LAN ports.
That's not to say that that this isn't one-of-a-kind, because the Realtek Gigabit controllers as well as the new software stack now supports teaming functionality across all these ports which enables four discreet connections to act as a singe massive connection with four times the bandwidth. Simply put, you've the equivalent of a single 4Gbps connection at your disposal for an ultra high performance digital media home server. Factor in Duplex operational modes and your theoretically have an 8Gbps connection! And unlike previous onboard LAN incarnations, these new network connection standards support Receive Side Scaling (RSS) that helps balance network traffic load among dual-core processors for better overall system performance. Furthermore, the network ports and the software stack are more resilient than ever before with fault tolerance support. Should any link suffer from a hardware failure, it is able to prevent network downtime by transferring the load to the other remaining working ports - be it in teaming mode or not. Sounds almost as if you're getting an onboard router with this motherboard, doesn't it?

New AMD motherboard

For overclockers, the A79A-S comes with Foxconn's proprietary Windows-based overclocking utility, FoxOne, which allows newbie overclockers to adjust their motherboard settings without venturing into the more complex BIOS environment.

Since the SB750 Southbridge was designed specially for overclockers, now is probably a good time to mention talk about it. One of the key features of the SB750 is the incorporation

of something called Advance Clock Calibration (ACC), which is a feature that works together with AMD's Overdrive to give overclockers more headroom with AMD Phenom chips - up to 200MHz or more in some cases. To add on, the new Southbridge will also support RAID 5, something that was missing from its predecessor, the SB600. Other features include more SATA 3Gbps ports (two more for a total of six) and USB 2.0 support for up to 12 ports (an increase from 10 ports). There's also an SB700 Southbridge model that has identical features to the SB750, sans the RAID 5 support.

Choosing a motherboard

Choosing a motherboard is actually something of a backwards process, because the motherboard will determine which CPU and RAM you can use. In most cases, I advocate picking a CPU first and then looking at your available motherboard options. It makes sense especially at the high-end, where the CPU will be the most expensive component in your PC. The only circumstance where I would choose a motherboard before a CPU is if you have expensive legacy adapters, older PCI or even ISA adapter that you are married to for industrial use reasons, and you require a motherboard featuring the proper number of legacy slots.
The 4th edition of Build Your Own PC features three different motherboard and CPU combinations, representing the latest in mainstream PC technology. The first build is a Pentium 4 LGA (Land Grid Array), the new Intel CPU package design for Socket 775. The motherboard used was an Intel D925XCV, which Intel kindly provided with the CPU, which was pre-production at the time I did the photography for the book. I'd actually put off doing the 4th edition for almost a year while waiting for Intel and AMD to release the platforms that would have a little shelf life, and the Socket 775 design with DDR2 support should remain the desktop computer flagship for Intel for a while. The motherboard also features the new PCI Express standard for the highest speed video card support, double the throughput of AGP X8.

owever, it's been AMD that's been pushing the performance barrier for desktop computers the past couple years, and we used an ASUS ABV Deluxe motherboard to support a Athlon 64 3800+ CPU. The ASUS motherboard supported 8X AGP, two banks of DDR, built in Gigabit networking, and didn't buckle under the weight of that huge chunk of copper called a heatsink:-) Both of these motherboard were standard ATX boards and could have just as easily been built in the other's corresponding case.

The Pentium 4 in Socket 478 with RAMBUS RDRAM (RIMM) was held over from the third edition, in part to illustrate the RDRAM, and in part because of the SCSI drive option. The motherboard was a D850MD, which is really a small format ATX, but was available pre-production back when I was doing the third edition. All of these motherboards featured full I/O cores with sound, I/O ports and USB, with the newer motherboards going over the top with 6.1 and 7.1 sound!

The second chapter of the book discusses choosing a motherbard and getting the most bang for your buck with components, which roughly translates into, "buy a middle of the road CPU in the latest technology (in case you need to upgrade) with a middle of the road motherboard." It's really a question of buying what you need with the option to expand, since after you build your own PC you'll be ready and willing to upgrade it when the price of the $800 CPU falls to $100.

Motherboard with 2.4 GHz Intel P4

Asus P4P800-VM motherboard with 2.4 GHz Intel P4 to them and upgrade my own machine. Since I do a fair amount of number crunching but am not too concerned about video performance on my workstation, I started looking for a new motherboard with a cheap but decent nVidia video chipset and decent audio chipset onboard, with good Linux compatibility reports. I was also interested in an AMD 64 bit architecture since I had heard so many glowing performance reports. It seemed like the amd64 architecture had been around long enough to have most of the painful issues worked out in Linux, and I like to play around with new-but-not-bleeding-edge technology. So I narrowed my choice to amd64 motherboards and looked for some Linux motherboard recommendations online. Newegg.com turned up a few likely contenders.

After seeing a few negative comments at various places around the web regarding Asus' negative attitude toward Linux users, and not liking some of Asus' recent hot and fan-ful motherboards, I decided to give other vendors a try. The MSI K8NGM2-FID had a couple of positive Linux user reports on Newegg, and was certainly cheap enough, with onboard nVidia 6150 video, so I got one.

DFI LANPARTY LT X48-T2R Mainboard

DFI LANPARTY LT X48-T2R Mainboard
PCB Design and Functionality (Difference 2)

The two mainboards we are comparing today look absolutely identical that is why everything we have already said about DFI LANPARTY LT X38-T2R may be repeated again about the new DFI LANPARTY LT X48-T2R.

As for minor drawbacks, we could mention not the best location for the FDD connector and the fact that the graphics card installed into the first PCI Express x16 slot will block the DIMM slot clips. We could also wish the board had a few external eSATA ports: all eight ports including those six that are provided by the ICH9R South Bridge and the other two from JMicron JMB363 chip are internal ones.

All other features of the DFI LANPARTY LT X48-T2R mainboard are indisputable advantages. It boasts eight-phase digital processor voltage regulator, very conveniently located 24-pin power connector and 8-pin ATX12V connector, solid-state capacitors, two second generation PCI Express x16 and an additional PCI-E x16 slot working at x4 speed, three PCI and one PCI-E x1 slots, six fan connectors (a four-pin one for the CPU fan), 12 USB 2.0 ports (six on the rear panel, two gigabit RJ45 connectors (Marvell 88E8052 and Marvell 88E8053), two-section POST indicator, Power On and Reset buttons on the PCB, color coded connectors and small additional heatsinks on all heating components.

We usually consider numerous jumpers, especially those that serve to change the FSB frequency, a drawback, but in this case they are necessary. Moreover, while many mainboard manufacturers usually forget about a jumper that allows disabling the integrated PC-speaker, DFI did implement it. Even such a minor thing as a Clear CMOS jumper, which is marked red adds another point to the company’s good name. By the way, you don’t have to use this jumper at all: all settings may be cleared by pressing and holding Power On and Reset buttons simultaneously.

Speaking of the accessories we forgot to mention one more important thing: Bernstein audio module:

It is based on an eight-channel Realtek ALC885 codec. And the peculiarity of this solution is that it is not installed into a special slot on the mainboard PCB, but is connected with a flexible cable, which means that you can move it around the back panel of your system case as far as the cable allows.

As for the differences from the previous model, the only one is the new chipset North Bridge: X48.

The most attention readers may have already noticed that “X48” is not written on the PCB, but on the sticker:

It may be hiding the old “X38” beneath it. Let’s try taking a peak under the sticker now:

Hm, nothing there. Ok… To prove that both mainboards have identical electrical CB layout we suggest taking a look at the components schematics, where the only difference is the chipset North Bridge chip:

abit AW9D-MAX Mainboard Review

abit AW9D-MAX Mainboard Review
abit engineers paid special attention to the cooling solutions for different mainboard components. This seems to be one of the greatest

strengths of this product and one of the most evident advantages. The chipset cooling is provided by the Silent OTES 2 system – a noiseless solution made of passive heatsinks and heatpipes. The heatpipes drive the heat to the heatsink covering half of the MOSFET transistors of the four-phase CPU voltage regulator. The other half of transistors hasn’t been forgotten, and is provided with a few smaller heatsinks to ensure proper cooling. All heatsinks on the mainboard are made of aluminum, but the small South Bridge heatsink features copper base.
