This post provides computer support to Double-click an icon on your Windows XP Desktop to run software, bypassing the Start menu.
Do you often need to start software not listed in your Windows XP Start Menu? Is clicking "Start" and selecting "Run", or pressing the "Windows" keyboard button then "R" too much? If so, create a shortcut on your desktop that you can double-click to run software on your system.
Follow the steps
1. Click the "Start" menu.
2. Click on the "Run" link, keeping the left mouse button held down.
3. Drag and release the link on an empty area of your desktop.
4. If desired, right-click the link, choose "Rename", and name it whatever you wish.

Fix Can't Install Hardware Issue
An Error Occurred During the Installation of the Device. This issue may occur if the driver that is included with the device is incompatible with Windows XP.
After you upgrade your computer to Windows XP, and you try to install a device (such as a printer), you may receive the following error message:
1. Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
2. Rename the Driver.cab file that is in the following folder:
C:\Windows\Driver cache\i386
For example, rename the Driver.cab file as Driver.old .
3. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
4. When the Welcome screen appears, click Perform additional tasks.
5. Click Browse this CD, and then double-click the I386 folder.
6. Click the Driver.cab file, and then on the Edit menu, click Copy.
7. In Windows Explorer, open the following folder:
C:\Windows\Driver cache\I386
8. On the Edit menu, click Paste to paste the Driver.cab file in the C:\Windows\Driver cache\I386 folder.
9. Remove the device that you tried to install.
For example, if you received the error when you tried to install a printer, follow these steps to remove the printer:
a. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Printers and Other Hardware.
b. Click Printers and Faxes (or the icon representing the type of device that you want to remove).
c. Right-click the printer that you want to remove, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion of that printer.

Use Device Manager to remove the device. For example, if you received the error when you tried to install a modem, follow these steps to remove the modem:
a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
b. Expand Modems, select your modem, and then press DELETE. Click Yes to confirm.
10. Restart the computer. Your new device should be detected and automatically installed.

- Cannot install hardware.
- An error occurred during the installation of the device.
- The Data is invalid.

Hard disk space required for installing Windows XP SP3 on more than one computer
If you want to install Windows XP SP3 on more than one computer over a local network, you can use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) mode of installation. Windows XP Installation Process is more typical so it need careful instruction.
To install Windows XP SP3 by using the UNC mode of installation, follow these steps:
1. Copy the contents of the Windows XP SP3 CD to a shared folder on the network.
2. Click Start, click Run.
3. Type cmd, and then press ENTER.
4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe /x:shared folder name
Note In this command, shared folder name is a placeholder for the folder on the network to which you want to extract Windows XP SP3.
5. Under the shared folder on the network, locate and then double-click the Update folder.
Note The Update folder is located under the i386 folder.
6. Double-click the Update.exe file to install Windows XP SP3.
To install Windows XP SP3 by using the UNC mode of installation, follow these steps:
1. Copy the contents of the Windows XP SP3 CD to a shared folder on the network.
2. Click Start, click Run.
3. Type cmd, and then press ENTER.
4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe /x:shared folder name
Note In this command, shared folder name is a placeholder for the folder on the network to which you want to extract Windows XP SP3.
5. Under the shared folder on the network, locate and then double-click the Update folder.
Note The Update folder is located under the i386 folder.
6. Double-click the Update.exe file to install Windows XP SP3.
