Can't Open Attachments in Outlook Express

Not being able to open attachments in Outlook Express is a common problem after updating Internet Explorer.  That's because Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are tied together and by default, a security setting is configured to prevent you from opening potentially harmful attachments. Only problem is that this setting prevents you from opening ALL attachments.

To fix  the problem, follow the steps below:
  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. On the menu, select TOOLS and then OPTIONS (a small window till open)
  3. Click the SECURITY tab on the newly opened window
  4. Uncheck the box that reads, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".
  5. Click the OK button to save the changes and close the window.

That should fix the problem.  Try opening your attachment again.
If this didn't fix the problem ... there may be another security setting somewhere else that needs to be reconfigured.

No Longer Getting Cableone Email?

As many of you are aware ... Cableone has made some changes to their email servers which affects the way Cableone subscribers receive their email.  Those changes take effect this month and if you've haven't migrated your email account over to the new system, you will stop receiving email.

Here's what's happening ...

In the past, Cableone hosted their own in-house email servers.  Instead of continuing to do this, they have now partnered with Google to use the Gmail servers instead.  So what does this mean to you?

Not a whole lot, but you do need to follow some steps to migrate your email over to the new system.  First, here's what you need to know:
  1. You do NOT need to sign up for Gmail
  2. Your email address will stay the same
  3. You will be asked to create a new password that is at least 8 characters long (and contains a capital letter and number).  If you're password already met this requirement, then you won't need to create a new password.
Now that you  know all of that, you just need to follow the steps to migrate your email over to the new system.  To do so, you can click here to start the Cableone migration process.

The actual process consists of a couple of steps.
  1. Log into your existing cableone account on the web and follow the prompts (creating a new password)
  2. Click the link (when asked) to activate your new account
  3. Reconfigure your email settings (if you use web mail, you don't need to do this step).
Many people struggle with reconfiguring their email settings.  If you're not comfortable doing this, you can call Cableone tech support to have them walk you through the steps (or schedule an appointment with me to help you).  Below is a summary of the new POP3, SMTP, and server settings you'll need:
  • POP3:   pop3.gmail.com    (Port 995 with SSL)
  • SMTP:  smtp.gmail.com    (Port 465 with SSL)

If you are comfortable reconfiguring your email settings, here are a few links to help you.

If you use Outlook Express for email, click here for step by step instructions on reconfiguring your email.

If you use Windows Mail for email, click here for step by step instructions on reconfiguring your email.

For help reconfiguring other email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, iPhone, etc.), click here.

How to Backup Microsoft Outlook Email

Microsoft Outlook has a built-in backup feature that lets you back-up your email messages and address book family.  The instructions below were written for Outlook 2000, but they are similar for other versions of Outlook (pre-2007).

To Backup your Outlook Email, follow the steps below:
  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. On the menu, select FILE and then IMPORT AND EXPORT (a window will pop up).
  1. Click on EXPORT TO A FILE to highlight it in blue then click the NEXT button.
  2. Click on PERSONAL FOLDER FILE (.pst) to highlight it in blue and then click NEXT
  3. Scroll all the way to the top of the next window and click on PERSONAL FOLDERS and then click in the box reads "include subfolders" is to place a checkmark in it (this steps make sure all of your email messages are backed up).
Note:  If you only want to backup your address book (and not the messages), then highlight CONTACTS (instead of "Personal Folders"). and you don't put a checkmark in the "include subfolders" box.

  1. By default, Outlook is backed up in the following folder (where "user" is replaced by your personal user folder):
C:\Documents and Settings\Userl\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\backup.pst

However you can change this folder if you want by clicking the BROWSE button on the next window and then selecting the location where you'd like to store the backup file.  I personally prefer to store my backups in the DOCUMENTS folder.

  1. Click the FINISH button when done and then wait while the backup completes.

Can't Receive Email from MSN?

Yesterday, many of clients reported that their MSN email accounts weren't working.  Turns out, there was a change at MSN that caused the problem.

You may have seen an email a couple of weeks ago that stated you needed to download software if you used Outlook Express in order to continue receiving email.  And if you're like most people, you weren't sure you could trust the email given today's internet scams.  Making matters worse, when you tried to search the MSN website for more information (in order to determine if the email was legit), you were unable to find anything ... resulting in you being in more hesitant to follow the email instructions.  And now you can't receive or send email from MSN.

Don't feel bad.  You were right to be cautious and hesitant about downloading software based on an email.  However, this email does appear to be legit and if you asked me MSN / Qwest could have done a lot better job of spreading the word about the upcoming changes on their site in order to ease people's fears.

Okay, so here's the scoop.  Over the past year or so Microsoft has been in the process of re-branding themselves from "MSN" to "Widows Live".  So everything is being renamed ... Windows Live Mail (instead of Outlook Express), Windows Live Messenger (instead of MSN Messenger), etc.

Also in the past, MSN did not support POP3 or SMTP (normal email systems) and so you had to use HTTP to receive email through Outlook Epxress (which was designed for POP3 and SMTP).  This created a lot of headaches for people, especially since MSN refused to support the use of their email through Outlook Express.

So now, MSN has decided to help their users out a bit.  Users now have two options in which to receive their MSN email.

The first option is to download Windows Live Mail (which is the new Outlook Express).  If you own a computer running Windows Vista, then you already have Windows Live Mail and don't need to do this.  But if your computer is running Windows XP or an earlier version of Windows, Microsoft is now letting you download and install Windows Live Mail so you can use it instead of Outlook Express.  Personally, I don't like this option.

The other option now available is to configure a POP3 and SMTP account.  The advantage of this option is that you don't have to download or install any software.  You simply create a new MSN account that uses POP3 and SMTP, change the ports, and then delete the old account.  It's simple and only takes about 5 minutes to complete.

For more information about how to configure your email accounts for MSN, click here.

If you need more help with MSN email, click here.  Notice there is a chat link at the top of the page too in case you wish to speak with an MSN agent.

Saving Pictures from Windows Live Mail to Your Computer

It's not uncommon to get pictures or other attachments in email these days that we'd like to save.  One of the questions I frequently hear is, "how do I save pictures in email?".  Unfortunately, the answer is different for everybody asking because the answer mostly depends on which program use for email.  Although there could be a couple of factors that affect the answer to this question too.

Generally speaking, to save pictures from email to your computer, you have to "Save the Attachment".  Some programs will tell you to "download the attachment".  These two terms basically mean that you're saving the picture (or other attachment to your computer).

It's too difficult to try and answer this question for all the different email programs in this one post.  So the instructions below only show you how to save pictures from Windows Live Mail to your computer.  If you are using MSN or Hotmail for your email, these instructions should work for you (assuming you're using the MSN, Hotmail, or Winodws Live Mail website to check your email).

  1. Log into your Email account and find the message with the pictures (or attachment) you want to save.  Note that messages with attachments usually have a paperclip next to them.
  2. Open the email message with the attachment (or pictures).
  3. If you see a yellow box with a message telling you the image or attachment has been blocked for your safety, you can click the link to "show content" in that box (assuming you trust the person who sent you that email).  Once you click that link, you should see the attached picture.
  4. Click the image and a small gray window should pop up.  Make sure the box to "Save the image" is checked and then click OK.
Repeat the steps above until every image (or attachment is saved).  This is where it gets tricky.  Depending on how your computer is configured, the image may be saved in one of several different places.

If you're using a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, then the image was most likely saved to your "Download" folder.  To get to that folder, just click your START button (lower left corner of taskbar) and then click your Username (which is usually your name).  After you do this, you should see a list of folders, one of which is named, "Download".  Open it, and the images you downloaded should be there.

If you don't have the download folder, then your image will most likely be saved in one of other places listed below.  Check them all.
  1. The Desktop (the main screen on your computer)
  2. The MY PICTURE (or PICTURE) folder
  3. The MY DOCUMENTS (or DOCUMENTS) folder
  4. You may also have a "DOWNLOAD" folder inside the MY DOCUMENTS folder.
In most cases, your saved pictures will be in one of the places mentioned above.

Use Gmail Account to Send Emails from Multiple Addresses

In this post I am going to show you how to use your Gmail account to send and receive emails from multiple addresses. Most of us own more than one email account say for example, one from Gmail, one from Yahoo and one from Hotmail. If you are tired of logging into multiple accounts to check your inbox or to send emails, I have a solution here.

Gmail has an option to integrate multiple email accounts (email addresses) into a single Gmail account. Once you integrate multiple email addresses into your Gmail account, you can use the same account to send emails from different addresses and receive emails for different addresses. Let’s take a simple example

Suppose you have three email addressess (email accounts)

1. 300allpctips@gmail.com

2. 300allpctips@yahoo.com

3. 300allpctips@hotmail.com

You can integrate the emails 300allpctips@yahoo.com and 300allpctips@hotmail.com to 300allpctips@gmail.com and operate all the three accounts from your single gmail account. Here is a step-by-step procedure to do this.

1. Login to your gmail account.

2. Click on Settings at the top right corner.

3. Under Settings, click on Accounts tab.

4. Now you’ll see the first option “Send mail as:

5. Under this option, click on Add another email address you own

6. Now a small new window will pop-up asking you to enter the details of your new email address.

7. Here you can enter any name and any email address. The email address need not belong to gmail only. You can enter your yahoo, hotmail or any other valid email address.

8. A Verification email will be sent to the address that you specify. Once you verify that you own the email address, it will be integrated to your Gmail account.

Now when you compose a new email, you’ll see an option to select from multiple address to send the mail. Also you’ll receive the incoming mails for multiple addresses to a single mailbox. I hope this will benefit you.

Before you leave, I should also tell you one good advantage of this. According to Gmail privacy policy, they will not send the user’s IP address in the outgoing emails. That means when you send an email from your Gmail account , the receiver will not be able to find out your IP address. But you don’t have this advantage in Yahoo or other email providers.

peer2mail tutorial

Introduction

Peer2Mail is the first software that let you store and share files on any web-mail account. If you have a web mail account with large storage space, you can use P2M to store files on it. Web-mail providers such as Gmail (Google Mail), Walla!, Yahoo and more, provide storage space that ranges from 100MB to 2GB.
P2M splits the file you want to share/store zips and encrypts it. P2M then sends the file segments one by one to your account. Once P2M uploaded all file segments, you can download them and use P2M to merge the segments back to the original file.

u can get the software from here

http://www.peer2mail.com/P2MSetup.exe

and for any info u can log to there website

http://www.peer2mail.com

How to upload a file to ur e-mail account ?

In order to send a file to an email account, Peer2Mail needs to split it into segments. Web-mail providers limit the size of an email attachment usually to a nominal 10Megs

There are 3 ways u can send ur files to the e-mail:

* Direct Send - P2M has a built in SMTP component that sends the segments directly to the web-mail providers. You don't need to enter your ISP details in order to use P2M. If you are using this feature please make sure you enter a value in the 'From Email Address' because some web-mail providers reject email messages where there is no 'From' address. You can even enter a fake mail address.
* Send Via MAPI - P2M can send the segments using MAPI (Usually your outlook client). When you use this option P2M will split the files and move the sending responsibility to Outlook. Note that it will use your ISP SMTP server and details to send the files. You may enter as many recipients as you wish when using this option.
* Send Via SMTP Server - Send the segments using your ISP SMTP Server. If you are using this feature please make sure you enter a value in the 'From Email Address' because some web-mail providers reject email messages where there is no 'From' address. You can even enter a fake mail address. You may enter as many recipients as you wish when using this option.

Ill explain the direct send wich i find it very easy to use.

normally when u open ur peer2mail program u receive an image like this u click the split/send tab as shown in the image

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m1.jpg

after that u click the folder icon wich is choose a file to send as shown in the picture

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m2.jpg

u will see an image like this u click browse and choose the file u want to upload in this case ill choose the movie white chicks wich is 700+ mb after that in mail to i type the e-mail account i want to upload the file to either is gmail yahoo walla or any other email account. in the optional encrypted password leave it blank.

also u will find the segment size wich will be how u want ur file to be divided into files of 10 mb that means if u have a movie of 700 mb it will be splitted into 70 files that means u will be receiving in ur inbox 70 e-mails.

after u choose the size wich normally is set to 10 mb u will see the send method here u leave it as direct send wich means u wont need an e-mail to send it this program automatically send it. then there is From Email Address - This is the source address of the mail. This address doesn't have to be valid.

Once you are done, click on the Ok button. here is an image of what ive been talking now:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m3.jpg

when u click ok u will find ur file u wanna upload splitted as u can see it doesnt really use ure harddrive.. You can now choose if you want P2M to send all the segments or only specific few by checking/un-checking the checkboxes. Once you are ready, click on the Send button. It may take a few hours to complete the operation depending on the file size and your internet connection. the send button is showed in uthe image below wich is the second icon:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m4.jpg

after u done that u can log to ur e-mail in ur browser and find the files there in ur inbox.

now we finished uploading so we wanna share our files without giving our original password!!!

Account Password Encryption/Decryption

If you wish to share your web-mail account with your friends and don't want to give them the real password, you can encrypt the real password and share the encrypted password with your friends. Only P2M will know to decrypt the password and your friends can use it to gain restricted access to the web-mail account without knowing the real password. If a user logged in to either Walla, Gmail or Yahoo with an encrypted password, Peer2Mail limits his permissions on the account. This is done so he wont be able to delete files, change the password or any other settings on the account.
To encrypt a password click on the browser tab and click on the orange key button. as shown in the image below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m5.jpg

when u do that a box will appear saying password u type ur original password in this case i putted sexyjoanna (and no dont waste ur time trying to think thats my password lol is just an example :P ) when u do that click on encrypt and ur encrypted password will be seen as shown in the image bellow.

To insure higher security for your encrypted password, Peer2Mail can use a different encryption key for servers that support SSL (Gmail, Yahoo). This way the password will only work on secured servers. SSL servers encrypt the transportation of data between your computer and the server, so it will be impossible to intercept the password while its being transmitted to the server. To create a secured encrypted password (that will work only with SSL servers) check the "Encrypt password for SSL Servers" checkbox.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m6.jpg

so that means if u gonna log into my account to download the files what u do is u go to gmail in this case as an example in ur peer2mail browser tab there u type my e-mail lets say joanna@gmail.com and as password u use the encrypted password wich in this case is |\srXSyaOn3tm9rA==|/ and u will be logged.

so we uploaded the files we encrypted the password now how to download them?

now thats the easy part lol

P2M includes a built in browser so you can easily log into your web-mail account. Before you can merge the segments you need to download them. It is important that you will save all the segments into the same folder. The first segment name ends with the P2M extension and the rest follow with a serial number 001...00x.

u can log to ur browser and download the files one by one but it will take u alot of time!!! so Peer2Mail can automatically list and download files from web-mail accounts. Currently P2M supports auto-download from Gmail, Walla, Yahoo, Spymac, Unitedemailsystems, Xasamail and Omnilect.

so what we do is we click in the browse tab then u click the home icon and u will see the different email accounts available for autodownload as shown in the picture below. after that click the e-mail service u gonna log to type the e-mail and encrypted password( the encrypted password wont work in ur normal explorer or firefox browser)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m7.jpg

when u log into an account wich contains files in it in this case i am into an account of a movie called superbabies or baby geniouses 2 as u can see there are 76 e-maills

now u can download one by one but that will take ages so what u do is u click in the download segment icon wich is the autodownload wich is faster to use. it is the folder icon as shown in the image below

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m8.jpg

when u click it u will see a window appear P2M will then list the segments (may take a few minutes) and at any time you can tell P2M what segment to download by clicking on the checkboxes that appear next to them. as u can see there is an auto merge checkbox u can merge them directly after download if u check it or u can do it later. if u added a decryption password when uploading u will need to type it if u didnt then leave it blank. see the image below

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/joannaj/p2m9.jpg

after u choose the files u wanna send u just click download then a window will appear and choose in what folder u wanna save the file. after that the download will start.

now concerning merging the files after instead of after downloading what u do is u click the merge segment tab when u do that u will find underneath ur folders choose where u want the files to be merged or in other word unzipped lets say i downloaded the movie in a folder called p2m but i want to unzip them or merge them in my movies folder so what i do i choose my movies folder so it will be saved there after that i click in the first icon wich is merge the segments in the selected folder when i do that a window will appear there where it says p2m file i click browse and i go to my in this example my p2m folder where i downloaded my movie there i look for the file wich extension is P2m and choose it after that i just click the merge button and wait till the file gets unzipped.
check the image below

How to turn MSN Messenger Display

How to turn MSN Messenger Display Pictures into User Pictures on XP
For the pix you downloaded from MSN

If you’ve ever wanted to turn the display pictures you download from MSN into an account picture (the one that appears in your Start Menu next to your username) for XP here’s how.

1) In messenger Choose ==> Change Display Picture and then ==> Download more pictures.

2) Download the desired images.

3) Open 'Folder Options' in Explorer and make sure you can view Hidden Files and folders.

4) Navigate to X:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger, where X: is the drive XP is on and User_Name is your username.

5) In here you'll see folders with long numbers for names. The next bit is trial and error. If you go into each of the folders you should see that some of them have a folder called UserTile inside of them. In that directory it will have .dat files. The files which have TFR in their names are the images (to make your life easier there is a list at the bottom showing which file is which for a few of them).

6) Going through all the UserTile folders copy these .dat files to a new folder. Now rename them and change their extension from .dat to .bmp by right clicking on them and choosing 'Rename'. Then try to open them in MS Paint or the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer. Not all of them will work (I'm not sure if this is just because some of them aren't actually image files, but any you downloaded should do).

7) If you want to edit them open them up in MS Paint and then make changes there or copy and paste them into your favourite image editor (opening directly doesn't seem to work as the formats are bit messed up from the renaming). Make any changes you want and save (either as BMP, JPEG, GIF or PNG).

8) Go to Control Panel ==> User Accounts

9) Click on your account and then choose 'Change my picture', then select 'Browse for more pictures'.

10) Browse to the image you just saved and select 'Open' and that's it!

11) You can also use the image as your SoD avatar - to do so you'll have to resize the image to being 64 X 64 pixels and save as either (gif, jpeg, swf, png). If you are uploading it to SoD make sure it's less than 20 KB. Otherwise upload to a web server and enter it's URL in the space provided and press 'Update Avatar'.

A list to help you identify the file you want:

CODE

TFR1C - Spider
TFR3F - Leaf
TFRRB - Jellyfish
TFRRC - Ladybug

N.B. The codes above may change, I'm not sure. I may add more files to the list later on.

Having Problems Connecting Yahoo Mail?

For months now, many of us have had problems connecting our Yahoo Email.  We've clicked our Yahoo Email shortcut in our favorite internet browser and then after practically and eternity, we finally see a blank white screen that reads, "Unable to Connect".  Then a few hours later, we can get in. And if that wasn't frustrating enough, some of our friends aren't having problems at all.

Troubleshooting intermittent problems like these are challenging.  But last night I happen to be paying a little more attention and noticed one minor detail.  The shortcut I was clicking on pointed to a different location then the actual address where my email was stored.  In other words, it looks like Yahoo moved my email account to another server and my shortcut was still pointing to the old server.

Since the old shortcut worked part of the time (but not all), I'm guessing Yahoo put a redirect in place so that when the old shortcuts were clicked, they would be redirected to the new servers ... but I'm guessing the redirect wasn't always working (which is why my problem was intermittent).

So next I deleted my old shortcut and used Google to get back to my Yahoo email and created a new shortcut.  So far that seems to have solved all of my Yahoo connection problems.

Send & Receive Faxes Through Email

MyFax.com - Faxing Simplified
Wish you can send and receive faxes through email? Now you can!  There's a web site that offers this service for $10/month (or $100/yr if you pay annually).

This may sound like a lot of money to some ... but when you consider the fact that you no longer need a fax machine, second line, or have to pay for ink and paper, the fee sounds pretty reasonable.

Most home users don't fax enough enough to warrant the cost.  But folks running a small business may want to take a look at this service (especially if you're running the business the from your home).

Although email is popular, many people still rely on faxing as a means of communication.  That's because they have fax machines instead of scanners and it's quicker and easier to fax something than to scan it into the computer and email it.  Faxing is also more secure than emailing.  So the need to send and receive faxes won't be going away any time soon.

Many small businesses don't currently offer faxing because of the expense (cost of fax machines, second lines, ink, paper, etc.).  This is a great alternative for these people.  Another advantage of using a service like MyFax.com is that because you can receive faxes via email, you don't have to be in the office to receive and read your faxes.  You can read them on your cell phone (if you pay for internet service) while you're out and and about.  So you don't have to worry about missing an important fax.

Many of my clients have asked how they can send and receive faxes through email, and until now, I didn't have a solution for them.  If this is something, you'd like to do, check out MyFax.com - Faxing Simplified, Anytime, Anywhere! Get a MyFax Number.
